GLADES COUNTY -- A 27-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday morning after his 2004 Honda Model 1000RR hit a deer on State Road 78 and he was then hit by another vehicle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, Alberto Castro, 27, of Fort Lauderdale was traveling southbound on State Road 78 approximately seven miles south of Buckhead Ridge just before 5 a.m. when he came upon a deer in the road. The front center portion of the motorcycle collided with the deer, causing the motorcycle to overturn onto the roadway, according to the FHP report. The deer was propelled toward the southeast where it collided with the guardrail. The motorcycle slid on its side, coming to rest in the center of the southbound lane. The driver slid across the center lane divider into the northbound lane.

An unidentified dark colored pickup truck was traveling northbound on State Road 78. The vehicle hit the downed motorcylist, propelling his body to the outside edge of the northbound lane. The driver continued past the accident according to the report. The vehicle was observed turning around in the vicinity of the Indian Prairie Canal bridge and returning to the scene of the accident. The vehicle stopped and then fled from the scene.

A third vehicle, a white 2005 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, driven by Calvin Grinslade of Okeechobee, 60, was traveling southbound on SR 78 prior to the crash. This vehicle had been passed earlier by the motorcyle. The Toyoto traveled over the Indian Prairie Canal bridge after the motorcycle struck the deer. The truck collided with the downed motorcycle in the southbound lane on SR 78. The truck dragged the motorcycle through the center of the southbound lane where both vehicles came to rest.

Law enforcement officials are looking for the vehicle that left the scene of the accident. The vehicle is described as a dark color pickup truck with dark tinted windows and an American flag hanging on the antenna. The truck was last seen traveling north on SR 78.

Alberto Castro died at the scene according to the report. Damage to the motorcycle was estimated at $3,000. According to the report, he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Mr. Grinslade was not injured in the accident. Damage to his Toyota pickup truck was estimated at $2,000. According to the report, he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
